Behavior Plan

As a teacher I truly believe that it is important for students to not only see where they are at visually behavior wise, but I also think that it is important for students to earn rewards for their good behavior as well.  I offer two types of behavior management in my classroom.  A Star link system as well as a visual behavior chart.

Every day my students start on ready to learn with my behavior chart.  As their behavior progresses through the day the move their clothespin up or down on the chart.  Up meaning good behavior, down meaning bad.  Having this chart allows students to see visually that they should keep going on having positive behavior, or that they need to turn the behavior around to make it positive.  If a student can reach “outstanding” on my behavior chart they should be proud of that as well as their parents.  When my students reach this on the behavior chart, a note will go home to parents telling them about their students “outstanding” day.

My star link system works in a similar way.  Star links are another form of allowing my students to see what good behavior can earn them.  Students throughout the week earn their links through good behavior, and good things that I see them doing such as working really well with their math partner or helping a friend with their work.  As students see their link grow, they keep up the good behavior.  But just as fast as they are earned they can be taken away for bad behavior as well.  The reward for the students with the most star links at the end of the week is as simple as letting them pick where they get to sit the following week, or even an extra two minutes of free choice time.

I also believe that time in class should be time spent working hard on becoming the best learners we can be.  I have high expectations for my kids.  If kids have a hard time getting work done in class because they are busy playing with their friends across the table or being distracted, I will keep them from choice time or recess time to teach that when we don't get our work done when we should we will miss the things we want to be doing the most.
